Software emulation of the classic PE1C

Back in the day (mid-’80s, for you purists), Tube-Tech founder/designer John Petersen was looking to deliver the sound of the highly-prized Pultec EQ—long out of production—to the day’s musicians. And so it was that the PE 1A—and Tube-Tech—were born. Now, a mere 25 years later, Softube has brought the magic of that sound to the digital recording world as a full-blown Mac/PC plug-in, the Softube Tube Tech PE1C Equalizer TDM.

This seemingly simple EQ is actually very different in its design than pretty much anything else you might have in your arsenal. For example, in the low end section, the passive cut and boost filters sit at slightly different frequencies (though the front panel shows the same frequencies for these functions), a carryover from the original Pultec. This allows you to easily do cool things like the “Low End Trick” (see picture below). And the tube design ensures that the high end response is airy and open, meaning that processed sounds benefit from improved definition, not simply added brightness.

 

The Softube Tube Tech PE1C Equalizer TDM is a model of a brand spanking new Tube-Tech PE 1C (still in production after all these years.), and the model captures all of the device’s pristine sound. As with all of their plug-ins, Softube was painstakingly faithful to the modeling of the circuit, the tube, the gain-staging, the individual components, the interaction of the components, and yes, even the power transformer.
